Communication as a Job Skill

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction and quite similarly, the professional landscape. The ability to pass information clearly and in a timely manner is not just desirable, but a necessity in every workplace. Though relevant for team collaboration and positive workplace relationships, communication also comes into play in customer/client relations and a business’ external operations. Though important, communication skills can be difficult to develop and implement in workplaces especially with the rise in remote and hybrid work systems.

WHAT IS COMMUNICATION FOR WORK AND WHY IS IT AN IMPORTANT SKILL?

Communication for work is the exchange of information and ideas in the workplace. Simply put, any communication at work, about work. It is an essential work skill as it ensures employees have the information they need to perform their responsibilities, reduces inefficiencies and help build a positive work environment. Miscommunication on the other hand, can cost a business greatly in terms of time and resources. 

Workplace communication can be either be formal or informal and can be internal within the organisation or external with other stakeholders. Within an organization, it is important to develop a healthy and beneficial communication process. Communication takes different forms including verbal, non-verbal and written. This can be expressed through different mediums including but not limited to emails, videoconferencing, face to face conversations, phone calls and chats, tone of voice, body language, and so on. 

IMPORTANCE OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS FOR THE WORKPLACE

Effective communication is one that is concise, delivered in a clear and understandable manner, organised logically, relevant to the receiver's needs, and timely. It also involves listening actively, being open to feedback, and the ability to adjust the message to suit audience and context. Effective workplace communication ensures better results for individuals, teams and the organization at large. This is because it boosts team productivity, employee morale, satisfaction, and engagement. Communication is also key for better team collaboration and cooperation. Ultimately, it helps drive better results for individuals, teams, and organizations. 

HOW TO BUILD AND IMPROVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Imbibing good communication skills helps to have a positive workplace experience. In trying to develop and improve this skill, one must keep the following in mind:

  1. Always listen attentively. 
  2. Pay attention to your tone and body language and that of your partner.
  3. Learn to choose the appropriate channel for your communication.
  4. Prepare for and participate in meetings.
  5. Always seek clarification when in doubt.
  6. Embrace feedback.
  7. Improve your writing skills
